Morro Bay State Park

Turns out this gorgeous place is a state park too! After an exciting morning running in Montana de Oro State Park, we started driving north. But we only made it half an hour up the highway. Morro Bay State Park beckoned!

We pulled over to park at the bay and admire the rock. The clouds lifted, the rain stopped, and we just had to get out and explore it!

A beautiful seaside scene in Morro Bay State Park. A group of three sailboats float on the calm waters of the bay in the foreground. The massive, peach-hued Morro Rock rises in the background into a moody grey sky.

As we strolled out towards Morro Rock, activity in the water caught my eye. To our complete and utter delight, there were a dozen sea otters! They were variously splashing around and reclining on their backs in the still waters of Morro Bay. We stood mesmerized. What a treat!

…are so lovely!

Eventually, when they scattered and moved far from view, we continued on to reach the centerpiece of the park. Morro Rock is huge and striking. You can’t climb it, but you can touch it. That was good enough for me!

We strolled back to town, occasionally turning back to take in the views. Liking what we saw so much, we decided to seek out our lunch in town. And we found the best case scenario, which in our case was burritos with Morro Bay views!
