Turns out this gorgeous place is a state park too! After an exciting morning running in Montana de Oro State Park, we started driving north. But we only made it half an hour up the highway. Morro Bay State Park beckoned!
We pulled over to park at the bay and admire the rock. The clouds lifted, the rain stopped, and we just had to get out and explore it!
As we strolled out towards Morro Rock, activity in the water caught my eye. To our complete and utter delight, there were a dozen sea otters! They were variously splashing around and reclining on their backs in the still waters of Morro Bay. We stood mesmerized. What a treat!
Eventually, when they scattered and moved far from view, we continued on to reach the centerpiece of the park. Morro Rock is huge and striking. You can’t climb it, but you can touch it. That was good enough for me!
We strolled back to town, occasionally turning back to take in the views. Liking what we saw so much, we decided to seek out our lunch in town. And we found the best case scenario, which in our case was burritos with Morro Bay views!
Want to visit Morro Bay State Park yourself? You really should – this is an unmissable Central Coast stop! And there’s more to explore: after the rock, check out the other trails, get out on the water or go bird-watching! Have a look at the official state park site – and then go have fun my friends! And when you’re done, be sure to join me for more of California’s incredible state parks!
