One of the most exotic places I’ve yet visited – and yet, somehow, Kazakhstan was also the most like home.
There is something wonderful about the vast steppe under an enormous blue sky. It inspires feelings of freedom and possibility. And this area is far from featureless: there are numerous canyons, rivers that run bluer than blue, and snow-capped mountains rising high above the plains. Perhaps the best part, however, is the smell of the steppe. Apparently it’s wild sage, but I would describe it as pure magic. It makes me wish I was born a horse and could roam these lands free forever.
Kent and I visited Kazakhstan in May 2018. We were there to run a race – and not just any race: the greatest race!
